Our
property, The Takaputahi Valley
Our
valley is surrounded by bush-clad ranges with the beautiful
Takaputahi River winding through the flats below.
It is rich in history, with a colourful and violent past,
with the renowned Maori warrior and ‘guerilla general’ Te Kooti and
his followers launching attacks on the coastal settlements of the
East Cape from these vast ranges in the 1860’s.
From
the violence of this history to it’s tranquility today, free
from the stress and distractions of modern technology, we can
provide our guests with real ‘time out’.

Our Cabin, adjacent to the river, is very comfortable, and typical back-country style,
sleeping 6 in 2 bunkrooms and can be either
self-catered, or fully catered for a smaller group.
There is a spacious lounge/dining area and with no
power. Lighting at night is by Kerosene lamps and the open fire
which provides a warm, pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.
There are sheets and duvets on the bunks, a hot shower and
a flush toilet. All
facilities are kept clean and tidy.

In the fully-catered option all meals are provided.
with some cooked on the old Coal Range or over
the open fire in the old Camp Oven just as the early
settlers did.
Activities
There are lovely walks along the river flats and up the streams,
with easy tracks into the bush to see some
of the large, centuries old Rimu trees and other large native
species in the virgin bush. For
those inclined
there serious tramps up into the ranges to give magnificent views
of the rugged hinterland.
A quiet early morning or late evening walk can often be rewarded
with seeing some of the wild game on the bush edges.
